How nature and biology work

Lovely Lichens – Disguised Superheros

Posted on February 1, 2019February 25, 2019 by Malu

It is still winter here, it snowed a bit more, and as I was watching a crow rolling around in the snow on my neighbour’s roof, I wondered about all the animals having tho search for food in the snow. While many species ignore the topic completely by hibernating, that is not an option for…

How Dermophis donaldtrumpi Got Its Name

Posted on January 4, 2019March 2, 2020 by Malu

Image source: envirobuild.com There is an endless number of species on this planet and we are nowhere close to having discovered them all. But scientists and “amateur” specialists are working hard every day to discover more. There is major motivation to do this often difficult work: Besides the fact that you will be the first…

How Scientific Species Names Work

Posted on December 31, 2018June 1, 2020 by Malu

Back in the 1700’s there lived a man called Carl von Linné, aka Carl Linnaeus. He was a biologist among other things and he is the one who standardized binominal nomenclature: Every known species has a name that is international. The science that sorts species into groups by how they are related, is called taxonomy….

Why Sexual Selection is a Bitch

Posted on December 21, 2018April 18, 2021 by Malu

Sexual selection is the term that defines the fact that in nature, often fit and sexy men are more likely to become fathers. This is shown in many different ways. The most well known example would be how two males fight, and the winner, being stronger or faster, or simply fitter, gets to mate with…

The ABC of Feathers

Posted on December 14, 2018April 18, 2021 by Malu

Birds don’t have hair, they have feathers. Mostly. Usually. (Recent studies show it is probable that many dinosaurs were feathered too!) Like us, in their skin they have follicles from which the feather grows. The main hard bit, the “spine” of the feather is called the shaft or rachis. The part of the shaft that…

About me

My name is Malu. I am a conservation-ecologist currently living in Germany. I’ve always been wild about the outdoors and can spend hours looking at an insect labouring away at its daily challenges, or a bird building its nest, or … there’s just so much amazing stuff happening out there! I’m really glad you’ve made it onto this page so I can share my joy with you.

Monthly Challenges

We only have about 6 to 8 years left to turn this environmental mess of a ship around. So much has to happen politically, but the people also need to change habits and start to appreciate our environment more. So every 1st of the month I post a nature care challenge with environmentally friendly lifestyle choices of habits for you to try for 30 days and, if you like, let it stick with you for longer, maybe even for life.

Lots of little droplets make up the largest ocean.

Are you absolutely unable to do the current challenge? Or maybe you are underwhelmed with the challenge and want an extra one? Check out the previous challenges to see if there is something you would like to try.

The challenges  make up the major part in the flow of posts here, so they are easy to find. But if you want to get a good overview of the challenges set so far, simply follow the link below.

Do you want to set next month’s sustainability challenge?

Contact me and pitch your challenge to me. It might be up next month. You can either write the whole challenge, and why we should do it, or just give me an idea for something to look into.
